Everybody realises the benefits of having healthy teeth and gums. Obviously they're needed to allow us to talk and eat properly. A healthy set of teeth will also greatly reduce the chances of agonisingly painful toothache (although nobody is safe from wisdom teeth coming through). The effects of a great smile on your confidence also shouldn't be underestimated. While you might know the importance of healthy teeth how do you make sure you keep them? Here are a few tips.

1) Don't just brush your teeth; brush your gums and tongue as well. Your tongue is covered with bacteria. As well as causing bad breath, if you forget to get rid of bacteria on your tongue it will lead to tooth decay. Also make sure that you brush the area where your teeth meet your gums very carefully, as plaque here is a big cause of gum disease.

Make sure you don't forget your tongue when brushing - this is such an easy way to improve your dental hygiene. A tongue that isn't brushed is one of the top causes of bad breath, but the bacteria left sitting there can also cause tooth decay.

While brushing your teeth, gums and tongue will get rid of the majority of bacteria and plaque in your mouth, you will not be able to reach everything without flossing. Plenty of people don't like flossing when they begin, but it's a crucial part of dental hygiene, so you should try to stick with it.

Finally, you should ensure that you have regular check-ups with your dentist. Even if you are following all of the above dental hygiene tips, something could still go wrong that you have no control over. Without an expert to check up on you the damage done could be serious if left untreated.
